Now now, before you all start frothing at the mouth and flaming me or something. its a toy.

BUT, initial reviews show, its a toy that actual does a pretty good job! As anybody with some tech know knows, NV is pretty easy, esp if you just use IR floods to pull it off. IR lights, camera, lcd, a lens or two, boom, night vision, its pretty easy to pull off.

some toy company made exactly that, and even gave it a bit of a splinter-cell kind of look. And its out RIGHT NOW, before the holiday season.

This is a toy worth picking up just for the parts, if you are a big DIYer. But if you have an itch for some NV, and not the budget for the real deal, this stuff is a nice comprimize. i'm picking up my pair later today.

Oh, and hi, yes, yes, i'm back, hi everybody. ^_^

I hear veiwing distanc eis total darnkess as is, is about 20ft and it because of the cameras location it throws off your depth perception big time.

even real expensive NV systems have shortcomings along those line, because basically they are all working on the same premise (making dark areas visible, either via IR floods or low light amping). some have 'two' screens to make it easier on the eyes, but even then it boils down to this:

camera > lcd > eyes = loss of depth (You can't have real depth perception on a flat view surface, even if each screen is fed from two offset cameras) and visual offset (the camera(s) and your eyes are never going to be a perfect match.)

Even the heli gunships and their eye mounted HUD have offset. you just have to get used to and train for it. And they have invested billions in trying to make them the best they can be. it won't happen until we get eyeball implants. ;)

But also, if you are handy, you could always re-arrange the guts and parts and make it better (not perfect, mind you, but better). for 80 bucks, its a steal just for the parts and trouble of getting everything you need to get hacking in one place, vs buying bits and parts all over the net or scrapping junk from all over to assemble the same basic idea from scratch.

Also, for the parts.. who said the camera has to be pointing /forward/? Heads up rear view goggle screen, anyone? That LCD could easily be mounted in the corner of some goggles in a helmet... okay, so i just gave away the secret, shame on me. ;)

But how could this be applied to airsoft? I'm sure 20ft in pure darkness is better than zero, but I don't think that plastic is ANSI rated. Under regular goggles? They'd have to be huge. Or am I missing something?

I said I'd quit if I saw someone wearing NV goggles

Well things might change at that price.
