Alright I caught this with the wife yesterday and I have to say that I wasn't all that impressed.
Recommendation:
If you are really hard up for some action in the theater go see it. Remember though it is rated PG -13 so it is basically a REALLY watered down action movie. The title of "Greatest Action Movie Ever Made" still belongs to the original, Die Hard.
Plot ****Spoilers****
Basically John McClain is at it again, this time against computer hackers. He has to employ the help of the actor that plays the "mac" on those mac and pc commercials. The villain is out to prove that the US's computer security is a joke and does so in order to cause enough chaos to steal a ton of financial data. If you boil this premise down it is EXACTLY the same as Die Hard 1 and 3. Cause a commotion, distract the authorities, and make off with a ton of money.
Observations *******Spoilers**********
Bruce Willis is good again as the ass kicking hero. He does that well.
Being PG-13 the action is watered down, no where near as good as the first.
The henchmen all speak foreign languages for no reason. You are never told why the bad guy need to employ French mercenaries. Plus there is no real satisfaction when they are finally killed.
The "mac" guy/nerd interest is pretty funny. I'm sure we'll see this guy in more films and bigger roles. He basically has the exact same delivery as in her commercials and it works against McClain's tuff guy role.
We see a bit of McClain's teen age daughter and while I rolled my eyes when I saw that the writers had included her, she has some great lines towards the end of the film.
The villain character sucks. He's kind of billed as a sympathetic character but not really. He wants to help the US by hurting it, kind of like Trovolta in Swordfish. What I really hated about him is that they went with a younger "pretty boy" actor instead of a seasoned veteran like they did in the original with Alan Rickman.
The computer stuff in the movie is so unbelievable that I actually laughed out loud a few times. It was so bad that it actually ruined some of the film for me.
The killing of the bad guy in the end is a total let down. McClain dispatches him in a blinding flash of "blah." You'll agree with me when you see it.
