There a many Internet sources that site Airsoft starting in Japan in the 80's. This is incorrect. Airsoft began in the US in the mid 1950's with a product by Mattel called Shoot'in Shells.

Evolution in Japan
The Japanese adopted Airsoft in the 1980's. This is widely believed the result of the country's strict weapon's control laws and their culture of honor.

Spreading in America
Airsoft began to be widely adopted in the US in the late 90's.

Current Day
Airsoft is spreading like rapidly in the US today. New fields and stores are opening on a regular basis. Paintball fields are being forced to keep players by holding both Airsoft and Painball games.
